Doublets & Surcoats – Origins & Significance
For centuries, doublets and surcoats were essential parts of a warrior's, mercenary’s, or noble’s attire. The surcoat, often worn over armor, not only protected against the elements but also served as a status symbol. It was sometimes embroidered with heraldic symbols or adorned with intricate decorations to display allegiance to a house or order.
The leather doublet emerged as a lightly padded alternative to chainmail or gambesons, worn by travelers, merchants, and fighters alike. Particularly in the late Gothic and Renaissance periods, leather doublets with elaborate embroidery, embossing, or trim became a sign of wealth and refinement.
Today, these garments are a staple in many LARP concepts – whether as a sturdy mercenary outfit, an opulent noble’s attire, or a rugged wild warrior’s look.
